One of the greatest joys an elderly
family member can imagine is spending time with her kids and
grand-kids. When the senior must use a wheelchair to get around,
these visits are often limited to seeing grandma or grandpa at their
own residence – if and when the kids can make the trip. Getting
into the children's homes is just too difficult when there are
residential street curbs and back porch steps to negotiate.
Wheelchairs aren't built as
step-climbers, but adjustable track wheelchair ramps can smooth out
the passageway from ground level up 3 or 4 steps to the entryway. The
grandchildren's home is now accessible, even if grandma can't get out
of her wheelchair. This new possibility makes road trips to visit
beloved relatives completely feasible. Instead of sending a birthday
card and talking on the phone on special occasions, grandma can now
come to the house and see little Johnny or Janie blow out the candles
on the birthday cake in person.
Adjustable track wheelchairs come in
two parts – one for each set of wheels. On end is propped on the
ground and stabilized by non-slip rubber stoppers. The other end is
secured to the top of a curb or a short run of stairs. Set up at just
the right width to accommodate Grandma or Grandpa or Aunt Nellie's
wheelchair, the track ramps provide a smooth slope with traction.
Rolling the wheelchair up the ramp and over the steps and into a home ready for celebration is worth a festive cheer of its own.
